Toads in the classroom!

During our morning learning we happened to find a new member to class who had hopped in through our door!

After we had finished screaming at it we thought about putting it somewhere where it wouldn’t get hurt!
Miss Irwin suggested the big garden in the allotment.

That’s where we left the Toad but we might go back tomorrow and see if he’s still there!

Dear Parents,

This week has been full of exciting days, we’ve been excited about learning our last two sounds in our purple set of phonic sounds- er and ure. We know that ‘er’ sound is like ‘ur’ but it usually comes at the end of words. We really like ‘ure’ which we say like a short ‘yor’. Our action for ‘ure’ is to point at an imaginary pile of cow manure and pull a disguseted face and say ‘ure’.
This week we have also made our mothers day presents and had our mothers day afternoon with our yummy cakes and we planted our tomato plants to grow at home. Then we finished today with our day of making disgusting recipes, which we made lots of our teachers eat! HA HA HA (Evil laugh). Mrs Cameron was definitely not keen on eating spider goujons!

Next week is our last week before Easter half term. We will be having Easter fun by learning about the Easter story, creating an Easter Garden outside, doing Easter crafts and who knows we might even have a visit from the Easter Bunny…if we’ve been doing good listening! Which is something we are also going to focus on next week- listening skills and sharing skills as sometimes as a class we forget that we need to do good listening and share nicely with our friends!
Easter-Eggs1

On Wednesday we are also going for a visit to see Rebecca at Horton Lodge to see how she learns before she joins us in our class next term. Wednesday is wear an item of blue for Autism Day, however we would like for Class Jonah to make sure they are still wearing their school jumpers as we will be going to Horton Lodge.

How you can help at home
*Practise writing our new sounds and finding them in words around us in our every day lives.
*Our writing of super sentences if getting really good now but we do need to practise using our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Why not try and write Miss Irwin some disgusting recipes at home!

Have a nice weekend

10 Reasons Why I Will Continue to Give my Children Handheld Devices

Is there a reason to be scared of technology when it can improve our children’s learning? Is it not the future?

Miss Irwin found this blog post and thought it might be something to consider when thinking about using tablets and phones at home- their benefits and how to use them effectively. It shouldn’t rule children’s lives but technology should support and develop it. Have a read.

Chop Wood, Carry Water

Image My children, both on handheld devices, learning and laughing.

Last week the Huffington Post ran this article titled 10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12.

As an educator who advocates for the intentional and appropriate use of technology, I could go on about this forever. But instead I’m writing here as a mother.

Here are my 10 reasons why I will continue giving my children handheld devices, and all other forms of technology as well.

1) Because banning things never, ever, ever works.

Remember when your parents wouldn’t let you watch rated R movies so you just went to your friends’ houses to watch them? I think I’d rather have my kids using technology and handheld devices with me beside them. Where I can engage with them, answer questions, and limit content if I have concerns.

2) Problem solving.

Making and eating disgusting recipes

Today was the day we finally got to make our disgusting recipes and oh my word did we have fun making them. We practised using all sorts of skills like spreading, cutting, mixing, cooking and pouring. It was a very busy morning.

We had to think about what ingredients we could use to make our horrible recipes. When we had finished we laid them all on the table to have a look.

Then we invited Mrs Cameron, Alison, Mrs Gifford, Mr Wood and Mr Robinson to come and try our disgusting recipes. They were a little resistant when they read our recipe titles but with our encouragement they tried some food. Then of course Miss Irwin and Miss Kippen had to have some too.

We loved watching them eat the food.

Horton Lodge Visit

Next Wednesday 2nd April, Class Jonah are going to visit Charlotte’s sister Rebecca at her school Horton Lodge. We are going to see how she learns and stay for dinner with the children. This is so we get used to how Rebecca learns because soon she will be coming into our classroom once a week, as of next term.

We are all very excited about Rebecca coming as we have met her before and think her wheelchair is very cool.

Our trip will only be a couple of hours and will be within in school time. We are going to make a book of our experience so we can keep a record for ourselves and for Rebecca when she comes.

Mother’s Day afternoon

Today we had a lovely day making and finishing off our things for our mummies. We finished our bookmarks of us as Knights and Princesses and made special cakes decorated with yummy icing and pretty flowers.

Then this afternoon we had some mummies and Annabelle’s aunty come into our classroom. We had a cakes and teas at the pink tables with the mummies, some of us even had hot chocolates with marshmallows! (Which is why we might be a little hyper on our return home!).

Then we went outside to plant up some tomato seeds to take home, because we are going to have a tomato plant growing competition. Miss irwin has asked us to take them home and try to grow our plants and to keep records of how big they are- we could do this with photos we could email or give to Miss Irwin to share with Class.

After planting up our seeds, we had choosing time and showed the mummies round. Then we read ‘spider’ sandwiches and shared our recipes from our recipe book we are making.

We all had a lovely time. For those mummies who didn’t get to come do not worry we all had a good time too and your cakes, bookmark and tomato plant have been taken home for you tonight.

You’ll never guess where we’ve been today…

We only sneaked into class Jacob’s classroom after they had gone on their holiday and pretended to be big children.

We went in and sat at the desks and did our maths. We even wrote our take -away number sentences on squared paper, like the big ones do.

Our target has been to take away on our own and being in Class Jacob’s room definitely helped our brains grow bigger to do that!

Ingredients needed!

This is our shopping list that we need for making our horrible recipes, we have some things in school but if you have anything at home that we can bring in it would be very helpful e.g. any spare pieces of bread we might have left over, pasta, some modelling icing or food colouring. Have a look at the list and see what you have in the backs of your cupboards.

We will be making them on Thursday and Friday this week.

Here is a list of our disgusting recipes

‘ear’ and ‘air’ the tricky sounds!

This week in phonics we have been recapping ‘ear’ and ‘air’ before we go on to our next sound. The reason is because they are really tricky sounds.

To practise this week we have been on ear and air sound hunts. On our first hunt we had to find them and recognise the correct sound. on our second hunt we had to find words with them in then read them. Finally we practised writing different ear and air words, them writing them on silly sentences.

Hopefully after all our practise we might now have them stuck in our brains!

Our next sound will be ‘er’. >

Dear Parents,
This week we have been very focussed on trying out our Year 1 brains. Miss Irwin tells us that our brains are very big and that if we try hard we can do Year 1 maths and Year 1 writing, but shhhhh…its supposed to be a secret we are this big brained.

In maths this week we have tried really hard to understand how to do take away sentences and solve them on our own. We have tried using number lines, our fingers and objects to help us find the answer. We have even been practising taking away the number and ending up with zero, we have even tried huge numbers like 100-100=0. We love doing this and think our brains are definitely on fire! In our writing we have taken some inspiration from “Spider Sandwiches” written by Clare Freedman.

We love reading this book because of all the horrible things Max the monster eats and that just like us he doesn’t like sprouts! In our topic plan we wanted to make recipes and after reading this we decided we wanted to make horrible recipes for people like the teachers and for our buddies to eat! So we have been writing down our chosen disgusting recipe. We have been using our segmenting and blending and ‘wow’ words.

We plan to make them next week. To make them though we do need a few ingredients so we made a shopping list.

&gtIf you have any of these ingredients in your house please can we bring them in to use. Miss Irwin has explained to us that we can’t use real spiders, beetles, slime and any of the other gross things for real as we might actually make peel sick so we thought of food alternatives we could use to make it look like those horrible things. Hopefully our imagination and culinary skills will produce some really horrible looking foods for peel to eat!

On Friday we had Sports Relief day where we did all sorts of sporting activities. We had lots of fun.

How can you help at home
*practise our phonic sounds ear and air
*get us to show you how to do take away number sentences.

Remember
Mothers afternoon on Thursday- if mummies can’t come you can send grandmas or aunties in your place.

On Wednesday Miss Irwin will be on an Ofsted course but Miss Kippen will be in all day.

Have a good weekend
