In January we will be starting Mystery Reader.

What is a Mystery Reader?

A Mystery reader is somebody from our families; mummy, daddy, a grandparent, auntie, uncle, big sister or brother, or even the next door neighbour, who signs up to come and read one afternoon at story time. But only Miss Irwin knows who it is!

They bring a story book of their choice and they read it to the class.

How do our adults sign up to be a mystery reader?

Miss Irwin has put a sign up sheet on the parents notice board. All you need to do is sign your initials on the date you can do.

Mystery Reader will be every Wednesday at 2.50pm.

Remember its a SECRET!

Parents Notice board

Legoland 036

The Reception Team have been trying to develop the notice board by the outside classroom door so it’s more beneficial to Class Jonah’s Parents and Families.

On the board is information to help Mummies, Daddies and families to understand what we do and how they can help at home.

Also on the board is our planning and what toys and resources we’ve been using that week. This is there so staff and adults can see what were learning but also to see if there’s anything they could help us with or have any ideas to help make our learning more fun! There is now a comments board which we would like adults to write on, whether it be times they can help, things they can bring in or positive feedback about learning in Class Jonah!

If adults think there’s anything else they would like on the board please can they let the team know! 🙂

Legoland

Our first full day trip!

What a fantastic trip to Legoland we had! We got to go through the factory to see how Lego went from grains, to legoo, to being squashed by a super strong machine that was as heavy as 36 elephants. From the machine we all got our very own piece of Lego.

We got to walk through the small Lego world of the North West! Miss Irwin did think it was strange that someone at Lego thought the Etihad was a worthwile building to replicate! Where as Old Trafford looked amazing next to Little Coronation Street!

We got to experience how to make Tall Towers with Geoff. He set us competitions to make the tallest towers, then he made our tables have an earthquake, so our towers fell down! We learnt how to make our bricks overlap so our towers were stronger! We made our towers wider at the bottom like pyramids and it really did make our towers stronger! Geoff still made our towers fall down with a strong earthquake but the second time our towers were much stronger and we had parts that didn’t even fall apart!

The adults didn’t get competitive at all during the tower competitions or during the tidying up! 🙂

After lunch we got the chance to watch a 4D film. The wind blew in our hair, the rain sprayed in our faces, smoke from the fire came around us and the snow fell down on us! It was brilliant!

In our groups we got to explore different things we could do with Lego. We made cars and tested them on the speed ramps and tall ramps. We drove giant Lego cars to catch the robbers, went in the fire station and played in the large soft Lego bricks. Some of us tried making our own tall towers on the vibrating plates. The girls made things with girl coloured Lego and we kept going back to the small world Legoland to see the fireworks around the Blackpool Tower! Miss Kippen and some of the children even went flying on the Wizard ride and Miss Kippen wasn’t sick! :S

Quotes of the day!

“I love Lego!” said Erin

“I like girl lego” said Olivia

“This is the best trip!” said Bohdi

“The best trip I’ve ever been on!” said Mrs Godwin

“So much fun and learning it was brilliant!” said Miss Kippen

“We were the best at making tall towers and got the record for the quickest class to tidy up all the bricks!” said Miss Irwin

All the children and adults had so much fun, we hardly had any energy left to stay awake on the bus on the way home!

Supporting Reading at home

How to help at home

Reading at home is one of the most important ways you can support your child. Here are some ways you can help.

· Try to create a relaxed reading atmosphere. Establish a regular time and place to read and ensure the surroundings are as calm as possible. If your child doesn’t feel like reading, offer to read to them instead. Be positive about reading!

· Children don’t have to read with you. It can be very motivating for them to read with siblings, grandparents or friends.

· Talk to your child about the books they are reading. Before reading, challenge your child to be a book detective: look at the book cover and see if they can guess what the book will be about or what type of book it is. As you read together, talk about what is happening in the book, what might happen next, and anything that has puzzled them. When your child finishes a book, ask them whether they liked it or not and encourage them to explain why.

· Help your child engage with books by using them as an inspiration for play. At the back of every Bug Club book there are activities for children to do with you or their friends. You could also try acting out part of the story, or making something from the book.

· Remember that reading a book is not the only reading your child will do. Encourage them to read signs, leaflets, recipes, instructions and so on. By reading these types of texts your child will often be reading without realising they are doing so!

Reading with Bug club

What is Bug club?

Bug club is the schools reading scheme. We have hard copy books and online books. The books that we get sent home,  we can read online when Miss Irwin has put them onto our reading account.

How do we use bugclub?

Log on to www.bugclub.co.uk

school:srrc

username: surname

password: first name

It will log us into our own individual reading page. That will look similar to this.

image When we first log in it will give a guidance video. We can also use the parent’s help button for guidance. Every book we read will give us Bug Points to collect!

We can pick our own bug to read with. The books allocated will be on the screen for us to pick and read. It is suggested we read them in order! At the end of each book is a comprehension question for us to answer, this can be done with support from adults but we should be able to answer these on our own!

Now all we have to do is get reading and remember, practise make perfect!

Happy reading 🙂

Dear Parents,

WOW! What a week! We have been busy elves in the factory wrapping presents and writing lists to Santa. Miss Irwin can’t begin to tell you how fantastic we have been at practising our Nativity, she thinks we may even need to hold our own Oscar ceremony after the Nativity! We can’t forget our wonderful trip to Legoland, where we were all so well behaved and we learnt to make tall towers that could withstand earthquakes! Surprising how quiet the bus was on the way home! J

In phonics this week we have learnt the sounds ai and ee. All our new sounds are in our sound pockets to practise. We will not be learning any more new sounds now until January as Miss Irwin wants us to remember and use our learnt ones correctly. This week we have started writing letters and lists to Santa for Christmas. We have been learning more and less for counting using our Reindeers! Maths is so much fun! This week the writer of the week award goes to Evie for super sentence writing, Evie got a Christmas glitter Super Star sticker, a prize from the Prize box, Evie gets to wear the Super Star writer Medallion and will get a surprise in the post from Miss Irwin.

How can you help at home?

  • Please practise singing Whoops a Daisy songs at home, by using the CD put in your child’s school bag! You know you want to!

Our new book system we are implementing has an online reading book scheme that has been set up for each child. Please sign on to www.bugclub.co.uk. Each child has been given ereading books to read and complete at home on the computer. The log in is written in your child’s diary. Miss Irwin has already set new books for us to read and will manage our assessment of our reading through this! If you look on the blog Miss Irwin will be posting a how to guide! Santa calling!

Today Santa camera was in force and Santa was keeping a keen eye on Class Jonah. Miss Irwin was checking the naughty and nice list this morning

naughty or nice scanning    image

we were still on the nice list but Miss Irwin did have to remind us to keep our listening ears on. Just as Miss Irwin said that …

image santa calling

Santa was calling her on the phone! He said how he had been watching and he was happy they were on the nice list. He did say they needed to check their listening ears though!  He has been happy with Class Jonah today and has really enjoyed their phonics blending for reading and the Nativity practise!Apparently Santa has been calling some Mummy and Daddy’s phones at home too!

A little Whoops a Daisy Angel present!

-whoops-a-daisy-angel-by-niki-davies[1]Whoops a Daisy rehearsals have been going well :). We love practising the songs and dances. We could do with a little more help with being better at our words and being a bit louder when were singing though! Which is why today Miss Irwin put a CD in ever child’s bag. On the CD is all the songs we will be singing in our Nativity.

With their only being 18 of us singing, the Reception class team thought it might be nice to have some adults who could join in the singing. Then when they come to watch they will know all the words and could join in! We think that parents, friends and families would love the chance to sing the Nativity songs over and over again, until they don’t even realise their singing it when their doing their shopping in Tesco!! 🙂

ENJOY!

Reindeer Maths

This week we are learning to recognise 1 more and one less of numbers.

We used our Reindeer ears to count up and down the numbers and find 1 more and 1 less.

We have learnt that more and add means the number is getting bigger and that less or take away means the number is getting smaller.
