Little Jonahs come to visit

This morning we turned into big Jonah’s because our Little Jonahs arrived to see what Astbury school was like.
When they came in we were in the ICT suite on wbusythings making characters to try and win the competition!
Then we came in a buddied up with them. We showed them around school. We went on the field, around the playground and showed them some of the big classrooms.

Then we showed them how to tidy up and the little Jonahs were so good at it, some of them were even better than us!
To finish their morning we had a story, one of our favourites ‘Superworm’.
We loved looking after them and we think they really enjoyed it!

Ice cream Shop

Today we finished making our new ice cream Shop role-play. We’ve been planning it for a week. We decided what we wanted- ice cream, scoops, chairs and tables, then we started to make it with help from our adults.
First we made the pretend ice cream
out of playdoh.

20130627-002751.jpg
Then we planned where things would go, put up our signs and put in our till, Ice cream scoops, cones, toppings and menus.
Then we had a go at making and ordering I’ve creams.

Deep blue sea

Dear Parents,

This week in class Jonah we have been practising how to do our work on our own without any adults help. In maths we looked at everything we’ve learnt this year from counting to, writing number sentences. Including 1 more and 1 less and the last few targets we’d been practising for doubling, halving and sharing. Miss Irwin and Miss Kippen were shocked at how on fire our brains are. In our writing we wrote about what kind of sea creature we would be if we were in the book ‘Tiddler’ , Miss Irwin would be a ‘Dori’ fish but bright green with a pink tail. Some of us were sharks, puffa fish, dolphins and crabs. We designed what sea creature we would be and what we would make it out of and we started to make them this week. Today we went to Buxton Opera House to watch ‘Tiddler and other stories’ By Julia Donaldson, it was brilliant! We loved it and the weather stayed good so we could have our picnic in the park. Thank you to the parent helpers for coming today.

Next week we will be finishing our sea creatures and making our new role-play an ice cream and smoothie shop. SO PLEASE SAVE YOUR ICE CREAM TUBS and bring them in. If you have anything else that you think might help such as; ice cream scoops, plastic cups, small chairs and tables for outside the shop, please bring them in for the role-play. Don’t forget to put your name on!

This week Miss Irwin has been out to meet next year’s class Jonah’s and it’s made is all realise how far we have come in almost a year! She is very proud of us all for working so hard.

How can you help at home?

  • We have been practising our tricky words and high frequency words: this, that, then, do, so , will, see, now, down, come and some. Please help us to read and write these, as well as the words in our sound pockets and in our diaries.

Notices

The little class Jonah’s will be coming in on Thursday morning and we are going to help them. We want to invite them and their families to meet all our families at the end of term for an ‘open afternoon’. This will be on Friday 19th July everybody is welcome to come in in the afternoon from 1pm. We can share our stories and things we have learnt. Please try and come…book it off now!

Enjoy your weekend.

Then we had a competition. We had to make a junk Pirate ship in 45 minutes that could float and looked like a pirate ship. All the dads were very focused on their task!

Dear Parents,

This week in class Jonah we have been learning about sharing in maths, odd and even numbers. We had a Pirate Day on Wednesday which was brilliant, we had a treasure hunt and did all made all sorts of Pirate things. Look at our blog for more exciting things we did. We wanted to stay as Pirates it was that good. We also had a busy week making our dad’s special things for Sunday! Then this afternoon we had our Father’s afternoon. Where we had a brew and some chocolate brownies we made. Then we played Pirate Bingo. After that we had a competition where we had to make a Junk model Pirate ship (thank you Mrs Waterhouse for all your recycling) that had to sink and look like a Pirate ship. The competition was judged by Mrs Armitt and the winner’s were Emily and her Daddy, Lucas came second for making a boat on his own and Hannah and her Daddy came 3rd. Well done to the winners bur for all the daddy’s and children who took part. Then we had show and tell and story. We all had a great time!

Next week we will be continuing with our sharing and halving of numbers and objects in maths. We will be practising writing down our questions ready to interview our possible new owners of the chicks! Also we will be reading the book ‘Tiddler’ by Julia Donaldson ready for our trip on Friday.

How can you help at home?

  • Practise the new sound ‘ir’ that sounds like er and ur sound.

  • Please practise sharing amounts between 2 people. We know that sharing means the groups of objects are the same on both sides.

Notices

Trip to Buxton on Friday to the Opera House to watch Tiddler. Please remember it’s pack lunch either provided by home or school. All children must bring a coat.

We had cool costumes with hooks and swords, some of us had even grown beards overnight!

In the morning we did Pirate activities. We played in the Jonah Pearl, Pirate water, Pirate sand, Pirate playdoh and cleaned the Pirate chicks out. We made Pirate passports, earrings, telescopes, Pirate wedding dresses and pirate cakes! Even John the Rector came in for a spot of treasure spotting!

In the morning we realised some of our Class Jonah treasure had been stolen, we thought it might have been Captain Hook! After lunch we came back and Bobby found a map!

20130612-222352.jpg
We looked at the map and thought the treasure was in the allotment, so off we went!

It turned out it wasn’t there, so we had another look! Then we saw John and he gave us a plank to use!

20130612-222602.jpg
We then decided we should look up near the field and the trees!

But we couldn’t find it there either! Then Evie realised we’d gone past it on the path…after a long look Daniel saw a funny object hidden under leaves and branches it was a Treasure chest!

20130612-223018.jpg

20130612-223030.jpg
It was full of our treasure and Pirate Treasure! We took it down to the classroom to have a closer look.
In the afternoon we also played Pin the eyepatch on the Pirate and Pirate Bingo!

20130612-223156.jpg

20130612-223204.jpg
Then we walked the plank and ate our Pirate cakes and crisps!

20130612-223317.jpg

We talked about our day…
Evie said the best thing was ‘everything what we did’, Jacob liked ‘the walking the plank’. Becky liked ‘finding the treasure’ and Lucas said Captain Irwin was the ‘best pirate Teacher ever!’. Captain Irwin obviously had nothing to do with writing that on the blog!! 🙂
We all had a great time! Now to go home and dream about finding more treasure.
