Learning to drive with Nick the driving instructor and making frozen ice.

On Tuesday we had the chance to learn about cars, how they work, who helps us to learn to drive and how to be careful drivers. This was because Nick the driving instructor had come to see us.

He told us all about the skills we needed to be a good driver-like being a good listener and making sure we can read. Nick explained you needed to do these well to drive a car. He showed us his car, we compared it to Miss Irwin’s and noticed he had pedals on both sides! Nick explained he had pedals to help the learner and just encase the car needed to stop.

We really liked Nick and now we all want to drive. We’ve been practising during our choosing time, some of us have even become driving instructors. Luckily though the learners have had a close eye kept on them because we have had the police on patrol giving out speeding tickets and cautions!

In the afternoon we made some Frozen inspired Ice and it wasn’t made from ice out of the freezer like some of us thought! We used water, glitter, colouring and objects to create our own frozen blocks. Then we snuck into the kitchen and hid them in Alison’s freezer! shhhhhh

Then all we had to do was wait.

2D Shape games, netball skills and balloon spotting

Monday morning we continued with our 2D shape learning. To show what we had learnt last week in maths we played shape bingo, played name the shape, made playdoh shapes and matched shapes to their names.

In the afternoon we had P.E. We have been learning how to throw and catch balls, doing bounce passes and throwing into nets.

After playtime we were lined up to come inside and then we heard something strange. A hot air balloon floated in front of us into the sky. We shouted and jumped about in excitement. So much so we decided to run up to the field and follow it. The man shouted hello at us.

Who knew you could fit so much into a day of learning!

Visit from the Nurse

When we planned our topic of people who help us we had asked to learn about doctors and nurses. On Wednesday Mrs Holford came to see us. She told us about her job and her special bag and what she had in it.

She showed us how to put bandages on our ankles.

Then she talked to us about germs. We did a ketchup experiment where we had to put sauce on our hands and shake hands with our friends. When we saw how far the sauce went round the circle we saw how easily our germs spread.

After she taught us the washy washy clean song.

We learnt how we need to wash all parts of our hands with soap to get rid of all our germs. After playtime we did another experiment with the light box and germ soap. We had to put on the germ hand wash and see it all over hands. Then we had to go and wash our hands like we had learnt to see if we could wash the germs away. Some of us did very well, some of us had to go back to the toilet and wash our hands again!

To finish our afternoon Mrs Holford answered our questions that we had prepared for her. We learnt a lot today and some of us now want to become Nurses.

Let’s just hope we all remember to wash our hands properly.

Thank you Mrs Holford 🙂

2D shapes

This week in maths we have been learning our 2 dimensional shapes. We have learnt they are flat shapes. We know their names

  • circle
  • triangle
  • square
  • rectangle
  • pentagon
  • hexagon
  • octagon

We also know that these shapes have magic numbers. A circle has 1 because it has 1 side all the way around it. A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners, so it’s magic number is 3. Squares and rectangles have 4 corners and sides, there magic number to remember is 4. We know a rectangle has 2 long and 2 short sides, that’s how we don’t get it mixed up with a square. Pentagons look like a house with a roof and have 5 sides and corners. Hexagons have an x in the word just like the letter 6- and a hexagon has six sides and corners. An octagons has eight sides and corners and we remember it like an Octopus with 8 arms.

We have been on shape hunts around school looking for 2d shapes. We have made shape monsters which will be on display on our working wall very soon.

Secret message from Miss

Dear Parents,

This is a secret message from Miss Irwin, not to be passed on to the children.

As you know we have Paddington Bear in our class who comes home to people’s houses at the weekends. Due to our love of Paddington Bear I have decided I am going to organise a trip to the cinema soon to watch the new Paddington Bear film.

I  was wondering if any mummies, daddies or grandparents would like to come with us?

At the moment no times have been set at cinemas but as soon as they are I will be booking a film showing at either Newcastle, Hanley or Crewe cinema. If you would like to come with us to watch the film, please can you post a comment on this blog or come and speak to me in school.

Transport prices and dates will not be able to be fixed until a date has been realised. But I will keep you posted.

Please keep this trip a secret.

Many thanks

Miss Irwin

Fire, Fire, Fire!

Today not only have our brains been on fire but so has our outside area!

This morning we started our day with firework dancing in P.E. We watched fireworks exploding in the hall then did actions to copy them. We did it all in the dark it was very exciting.

Then we used our firework dance moves to be make them into a dance to Katy Perry’s Firework song. We  started off as flames then exploded into fireworks. Did you know fireworks are extremely loud and move very fast?

Then after playtime we had a surprise! It was a real fire. We learnt today that when we think something is really cool or epic, we can use different words than those to describe things. We can think about how Wow things are! The fire wasn’t just epic we described it as bright yellow, tall flames, warm and noisy. For the rest of the day we watched the fire and drew pictures of it. We wrote wow words about the fire, we toasted marshmallows on it and then we played Firemen and Fireladies!
It was definitely a fire filled fun day!

Happy Bonfire Night.

Back to school

Back to school today and we have been on top form all day. We enjoyed learning our new sound ‘r’ today. We loosened up our bodies and fingers with playdoh disco. The we went to start our new role-play outside, our Fire Station. We have erected a pole now we need to paint it black. We might also need to have some fire drills to make sure our firemen and firelady skills are up to scratch.

Our new topic is ‘People who help us’, this has come from our topic plan ideas that we shared at the end of last term. As you can see we had some great ideas!

Miss Irwin has told us she has got some special people to come and meet us over the next few weeks based on what we wanted to learn. This week we are learning about fire and we are going to be learning how to use wow words to describe fire.

In maths today we found fairy dust on the floor and then saw the Naughty fairy. She had left us a message which said we needed to go on a hunt for some special signs. We learnt these signs were called add signs. Which we can use when we add 2 groups of things together. It tells us that the when we add groups together the number gets bigger. For our first day of addition we were excellent. Who knows how big our maths brains will be by the end of the week!

This morning we also practised our number recognition by using the Fireman’s hose to squirt off  the fire numbers.

IMG_0332[1]

Then in the afternoon we learnt about the Christmas story and how special Angels are with Mrs Armitt. We all made our own halos with a special word about fairies on them.

We are learning about the Christmas story so we know all the characters and the main event to help us with our Nativity. ‘Angel Express’. Our production of the Nativity is in the second week in December- Tuesday 9th 2.15pm and Wednesday the 10th at 5.30pm, so we have a lot of practising to do.
