Making habitats

We have been learning about animals and we learnt that animals live in habitats and that every animals habitat is different. In the afternoon we had the chance to make different types of habitats for all sorts of animals…

Mr Naylor and Miss Kippen helped us make habitats for farm animals, insects and other animals. We really did think about the different things the different animals would need.

Meet Fergie!

This weekend Miss Irwin had to continue ‘CHICK WATCH’ at home as our smallest chick which is a Sablepoot needed some nursing. He had to be helped out of his egg on Thursday by Mrs Brammled as he couldn’t quite make it out on his own. He is a very small breed anyway but he was very weak. Fergie had to be brought home to Miss Irwin’s house because he wasn’t ready for the big cage with the others and he needed a heat lamp to keep him warm. On Friday when he left school it was very touch and go as to whether Fergie would survive!

But with a little box, a strong lamp and the the help of Big H, Mrs Irwin and Archie the dog we are glad to say Fergie is getting stronger. He even managed to watch some of the Manchester United game to day and watch the real Fergie retire!

He might be coming back into school soon but he will not be able to be with the others until he is much bigger and stronger!

Everybody has been coming in our classroom waiting to see if the chicks are here! It’s such an exciting time! Hopefully the chick will be out of its shell tomorrow when we come in!

Egg Diaries; Day 14 Egg candling!

Today a lady called Hayley came to visit us. She is Miss Irwin’s friend who helped get some of the eggs for hatching.

Hayley came to show us how to see if the eggs had chicks inside by using a special torch. We had to turn the lights off and use a coat to make it dark around the egg. We were very nervous. Even Mr O’Leary came into to watch!

She shone the torch around the egg shell, if it was bright in the egg there was no chick. If it was dark with a light patch there is a chick inside.

We got very excited when we found out we had some chicks in the eggs.

Some of the eggs we couldn’t tell if they had chicks in because the shell was too thick, so Hayley left them in and we will just have to wait and see!

Now we have only one incubator full of eggs.

Our due date is this coming Wednesday. We are hoping to keep 4 in the new school allotment but will have to find good homes for the others.

Keep watching!

Beginning to bird watch!

As our bird hide begins to used we are starting to use the spotter cards and binoculars to try and spot birds.

We have also started to put up our bird cakes we’ve made. We are going to keep adding things to the area to attract the birds.

Keep reading our blog to find out what else we will do!

Camouflage and bird hides!

What a start to the new term we’ve had!  We came into our classroom to find an incubator waiting for eggs to be put in. Miss Irwin says were going to put them in on Wednesday and hopefully on a few weeks we will have chicks!

We also found a letter from Percy to tell us he had got us some things for our new topic. We found a box in his shed with binoculars, spotter bird dials, a bird feeder clip boards for our bird spotter cards and a bird watchers hat.

He left us a list of things to do before we could set up our bird hide! So this afternoon we tidied up the sheds, tools and moved our planted sunflowers into the new greenhouse.

In the new green house Percy has put us some strawberries, lettuce and tomatoes. Fahren has also brought us some seeds more vegetable seeds to plant. Fahren has been very busy this half term holiday and made some bird houses with his Grandad, we are thinking of putting them in the or around the investigation area.

After tidying up some of us started to make the shed more camouflaged. We decided we wanted to paint it with similar brown and green paint and to cover some of the shed with material.

In Percy’s letter he also mentioned he has got us some caterpillars to watch grow and turn into butterflies. Were now just waiting for them to arrive!
We also decided what we want to put in the Investigation Area with Mrs Jones. We wanted to put some bird food out to attract the birds.

Bird cake!

As part of our topic this term we are going to be making bird cakes. No, not with real birds…were going to use lard and birdseed to make special cakes for the birds. Which is why we are going to need empty yoghurt or cream pots,  like these ones!

If you could save some up at home and bring them in, we can make our cakes to put in the investigation area. Then we can sit in the bird hide and hopefully wait for the birds to come!
