Take aways are yummy ðŸ˜ƒ

Miss Irwin knows the way to our brains- through our tummies!

This morning we we’re working towards our maths target of being able to take away different amounts from 1 less to 6 less.
We got to do different ways of practising our skills. By taking away bears into their caves, eating moon rocks and making our own number sentences. We also practised our patterning making while having a break from taking away.
We were lucky when playing take away with Miss Kippen because Miss Irwin said if we get our take away wrong Miss Kippen gets to eat our moon rocks (marshmallows). We have been learning not to guess our answers but to work it out.

Our target this week in maths is to practise being able to find 1 less than a given number. We have been using our finger to count and practise with.

This afternoon is where the flour and slime mess came from. We couldn’t help ourselves we wanted to test our moon buggies on the moon and make more alien slime. But don’t worry mummies we don’t use products that don’t wash out 😉

You’ll never guess where we’ve been today…

We only sneaked into class Jacob’s classroom after they had gone on their holiday and pretended to be big children.

We went in and sat at the desks and did our maths. We even wrote our take -away number sentences on squared paper, like the big ones do.

Our target has been to take away on our own and being in Class Jacob’s room definitely helped our brains grow bigger to do that!

Take away hunts and Year 1 brains!

This week in our maths we have been learning how to read, write and solve take away number sentences. On Monday we had our targets set for us- We have to solve a take away number sentence on our own. We can use our fingers to take away, we can use number lines to help us count down and we can even count down by putting the big number in our heads and taking away on our fingers.

We have been on number sentence hunts where we had to find a number sentence outside then come and solve it using our counters-all on our own!

So far we are all doing really well at trying to remember that when we do a take away number sentence that the number for the answer will get smaller.

Today Miss Irwin tried our brains to see how big they were. We had to take 1 away from large numbers above 20. We even did 48-1=47! Then we talked about if we have the same number taken away we end up with 0 eg. 11-11=0. We got really excited about all the different take away number sentences we could do on our own with big numbers. Some of us even did 100-100=0. Our brains were on FIRE!

Super subtraction

This week we started learning how to take away. We learnt that take away means the number gets smaller because something is being taken away from it.

For our targets we needed to practise learning 1 less than a given number to 10.

Then we practised writing number sentences and take away different amounts! Our brains are on fire and it’s only Tuesday!

To help us practise at home we can continue to count carefully, by counting one object at a time. Then practise taking objects away and counting (carefully) how many are left.
